History of Taekwondo
| The martial art Taekkyon (now
known as Taekwondo), had been secretly handed down by the masters of
the art until the liberation of Korea from the Japanese colonial rule
in 1945. Song Duk-Ki, one of the masters of Taekkyon, then presented a
demonstration of the martial art before the first Republic of Korea
president, Syngmann Rhee; clearly distinguishing Taekwondo from the
Japanese Karate which had been introduced by the Japanese rulers.
Following this, Taekwondo experts began opening Taekwondo gymnasiums
all over the country. After the end of the Korean war (1950 - 1953),
Taekwondo was widely practised and hugely
popular. |
