'Poome sae' is the Korean name for pattern.
When performing a poomsae, a series of 18 to 40 different techniques
are used in a series of defense, counter attack and attacking moves
which must be performed in a precise sequence. These movements
incorporate
various stances and footwork combined with blocks, kicks and strikes,
which are performed in imaginary combat against a number of
different
assailants.
W.T.F. Taekwondo involves the practise of the following Poomsaes.
Poomsaes originate from the book 'I Ching', a Chinese oracle. The
I Ching consists of 64 hexagrams, which contain two sets of three lines
either closed or broken. The closed lines represent Yang and the open
lines represent Yin. In the Chinese language, the unity of Yin and Yang
is called 'taichi'. In the Korean language, this unity is called
'T'ae-guk'. This
explains the term Poomsae Taegeuk. The eight trigrams together are
called
Pal-gwe as in Poomsae Palgwe.
